Overwatch 2 player points out cosmetic item refers to actor and professional wrestler Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
Highlights
- Overwatch 2 begins season 8 with the introduction of a new tank character, ‘Mauga,’ and an exclusive cosmetic spray item reminiscent of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s iconic eyebrows.
- With a subtle reference to The Rock in Mauga’s spray, a future Overwatch 2 update may include a cosmetic item inspired by The Rock.
Mauga’s spray for Overwatch 2 references actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and his eyebrows. The Rock has been raising his iconic eyebrows since the 1990s, and now Overwatch 2 celebrates him with a unique tribute.
Overwatch 2 Season 8 was released on Dec. 5 and with it came several tweaks to the game. Season 8 introduced a PvE mode called Battle of the Beasts, soft and hard weapon skins, and more. Like previous seasons, Season 8 also introduced a new character to Heroes of the Storm: Mauga. Introduced at BlizzCon 2023, Mauga is a new tank character with two mini-weapons that do a lot of damage. Mauga has a striking appearance with the raised eyebrows of The Rock.
Reddit user Cheese Bowl recently posted an image of Mauga and The Rock from Overwatch 2. The Rock has one eyebrow raised to the left and the other lowered. The comparison made by a Reddit user shows how accurately the spray recreates The Rock, but without the shadows that highlight his raised eyebrows and half of his face. The Rock often turns his head when he strikes this pose, mainly to hide his closed eyes and emphasize the intensity of his open eyes.
Oh my God they actually did it

Like The Rock, Maug has an impressive set of tattoos and a Samoan heritage, and the protagonist of Overwatch 2 is heavily inspired by Samoan culture, just as The Rock has demonstrated throughout his career as a professional wrestler and in various films. In one exciting scene, Mauga performs a pelvis dance, similar to that of The Rock in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, while in another Mauga adopts a pose familiar from professional wrestling. Mauga’s pose is not The Rock’s gesture, but WWE wrestlers such as Lex Luger and Raquel Rodriguez are known for this pose.
While Mauga’s spray is a more subtle homage to The Rock, it’s clear that the facial expressions are the same. Both The Rock and Mauga appear to be homages in that they reference Samoan traditions, and if Blizzard continues to update Overwatch 2, we may see more cosmetics for Mauga inspired by The Rock.
